Just seen this report about Panorama's next episode and it targets the videogame industry by looking at gaming addiction.

Whilst there doesn't look to be any scientific evidence to back it up I know there are gaming addiction clinics in countries like the Netherlands.
What are your thoughts? Can people get to a stage where they get addicted to gaming?|||Yes. Was addicted to Evony for around a year. Was on it 18 hours a day, It was my life I had to protect the virtual stuff from being stolen ect..
Silly and as sad as it was it did mean a lot to me and I neglected loads of other things and people for it.|||hmmm that will be very interesting, My opinion on this would be that people are not addicted to gaming but with all the new gen technology the game-makers have found great ways of making there games be playable for long lengths of time.
SNES, Mega Drive and Master System, you purchased a new game , clocked it, then never played it again, with the online system coming into ploy such titles like Call of duty and Fifa 11 have people playing regulary and if you dont play you fall behind the pack so to speak so this motivates gamers to carry on playing
should be an interesting programme all the same|||But if you get into a system "where you get behind if you don't play and therefore HAVE to play" doesn't that say more about the person than the game? i.e. they already have a disposition to being addicted to something and they just happened to have videogames as the medium rather than say drugs.|||I found myself being addicted to PES6, but not for the gameplay but for the editing part. I literally came from work and was on it around 7 hours per day, most of the day on my days off.
Until one day my wife "accidentally" corrupted my memory card and that was the end of that.
Gaming addicted can be just as bad as being alcoholic and having gambling problems, in my opinion.|||Cool|||FIFA11's <removed> cured my addicition of FIFA :)|||yea good point when you put it that way, just seen the post above mine and he says he was addicted so hell I guess there is such a thing
However like you mentioned this could be more to do with the person than anything i.e. a married man with 4 kids may play casually and not ever feel the need to keep up, whereas a single male may feel the need to play all the time due to basically nothing else for them to entertain/occupy them.
Be interesting to know Jax Demon what lifestyle you lead that would provide you the time to play 18 hours a day and I dont mean that as a critisism, just to see if it backs up my point previously|||For reference, I'm not aiming to have a dig at anyone with my comments in this thread, I'm just interested to hear what people think. I used to play the same game every evening for 5 hrs when I was practicing for tournaments, I guess you "could" class that as addiction, personally I don't as I was training for something specific.|||

3 kids, a missus. Work from home mostly helping my father on his projects. Pretty easy to play Evony and work on the same computer, I know loads who do it.
Neglected time with my partner, kids and of course slacked on my work for the last few months. The game affected everything.
I had the 3rd best hero on the game on the server I played, loads of enemies wanting it and as it's a 24 hour game you can lose stuff all the time. 9 cities and then of course there is troop upkeep on Evony age 1 where you have to farm npcs (Non player cities) for food to feed your troops. I was rocking millions of troops at one point.
Was terrible, only realised how much I neglected stuff when I finally quit the game and broke free. I was addicted to it I just had to be on it daily, Soon as I got up all the way till I went bed. Totally regret playing it.|||

I was kind of addicted to fifa 08 because it's where the 5-v-5 come and the realistic football experience, was really good and i used to play the game like after school till late night.
But now i'm max playing the game in 3 hours or 4 at nights only and it's clubs or 1v1. I just don't find it realistic as fifa 08 was but it's defiantly better than 09 and 10.|||My English talk is about Gaming Addiction, interesting topic!|||Good thread, It certainly different than the same old nonsense. I find it hard to believe people can be addicted to anything, but acknowledge they are, although I havn't ever done heroin. But I will give it a watch. Can you be addicted to a forum? Unless you work here.|||

FIFA11's shi tness cured my addicition of FIFA :)

This, I used to love playing the Fifa series.
